INTENT
At Hatch Ride, we place great importance on a curriculum which develops the whole child. Through our core school values, we foster an environment where the emotional, physical, academic, social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of each child is considered.
Our curriculum is mapped to include coverage of the National Curriculum and provides a range of experiences for our children through enhanced activities that reflect the children’s own interests and is responsive to current world events. It is designed to challenge, engage, motivate and promote personal excellence with the ultimate goal of each child achieving their full potential and becoming lifelong learners who make a positive contribution to the community and society.
IMPLEMENTATION
The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 and other experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the children in our school, allowing them to flourish. The curriculum provides children with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which they can learn and develop a range of transferable skills. The curriculum is driven by the leaders of the school through the embedding of long-term curriculum overviews and schemes of work for each and every subject.
Age-related expectations combine the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills to create a purposeful and exciting learning journey for every child. The curriculum has high expectations to combine transferable skills, demonstrate a breadth of vocabulary and oracy and develop strong, meaningful cross-curricular links. Inviting classroom environments stimulate learners and engage them in quality thinking and reasoning. Explicit weekly and medium-term planning is responsive to children’s needs.
Children work towards the Early Learning Goals of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in Reception. The majority of children move onto the National curriculum Programmes of Study at the start of year 1. Throughout this period and beyond all children are still developing their phonic knowledge through the Letters and Sounds Programme and developing their fluency in reading through the school’s structured approach to the daily teaching of reading.
The National Curriculum is delivered using an integrated themed approach. Where subjects can be integrated into the theme, they are, but others are still taught discretely where this is more appropriate. The core subjects are assessed against expected attainment and progression of skills using PIXL. The children’s progress is tracked and this information is used in regular pupil progress meetings which can be used to support appropriate intervention programmes. The more able are challenged further in their learning and children who find aspects of their learning more difficult are appropriately supported so that they too are enabled to experience success.
Throughout the year there are special weeks that have a clear focus, for example: Healthy Minds, Careers, Online safety and subject specific weeks. These special events enable the children to widen their experience and knowledge of themselves, the world around them and their opportunities in life.
The school takes pride in providing a highly inclusive environment, where learners of all abilities demonstrate high levels of engagement their educational progress. Children at all levels are helped to achieve their potential. Those who are most able are challenged and supported through being offered tasks which provide opportunities for greater depth and those who present with a barrier to learning are encouraged and given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace or simply to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs.
Subject leaders play an important part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review and the sharing of good practice which contributes to the ongoing commitment to evolve and improve further. Subject leaders are given the opportunity to develop their own subject knowledge, skills and understanding, so they can support curriculum development and their colleagues throughout the school.
Our outdoor environment and the local community are considered an opportunity for active learning for all our pupils. The school grounds have been developed so they can enrich different curriculum areas, and outdoor learning is actively promoted and planned for.
IMPACT
Pupils leave Hatch Ride Primary School with a secure understanding of the academic content; with the understanding of how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible and aware; how to make positive contributions to the local area and how to endeavour to be the best that they can be.
